Can a Spanish-speaking notary translate my documents?
Not necessarily — notarizing a signature and certifying a translation are two different services, and many notaries who speak Spanish aren't certified translators. Ask specifically whether they offer certified translation or only bilingual notarization before you book.
Is a 'notario publico' the same as a notary public in the US?
No, and this trips up a lot of people — in Mexico and much of Latin America a 'notario publico' is a licensed attorney with far broader authority, while in the US a notary public's role is limited to witnessing signatures. A Spanish-speaking US notary is not automatically qualified to give legal advice, even if the title sounds similar.
